Natural Geography


Beijing is located at the northern tip of the North China Plain. It is surrounded by Hebei Province. It stands on 115.24 to 117.24 degrees East longitude and 39.28 to 41.05 degrees North latitude. Beijing covers 16,807.8 square kilometers, among which the area of 87.1 square kilometers is city area. The terrain is higher in the northwest and is lower in the southeast. The mountainous areas in the west are called the Western Mountains, which belong to the Taihang Mountain Range. And the ones in the north are called the Jundu Mountains, which belong to the Yanshan Mountain Range. The altitude of the city center is 43.71 meters above sea level. The peak is Dongling Mountain on the border of Mentougou and Hebei province, which is 2303 meters above sea level. Beijing has a mild continental climate with its four seasons distinctively divided. The winter in Beijing is dry and highly freezing while the summer here is rainy and baking hot.
Spring and autumn are relatively short, while winter and summer are rather long. The average annual temperature is 10 to 12 degrees centigrade. The lowest temperature can reach -27.4 degrees centigrade and the highest can be above 42 degrees centigrade. Beijing has 180 to 200 days of frost-free weather. There are five rivers running through Beijing, namely the Yongding River, Chaobai River, North Cannel, Juma River and Gouhe River.
